Mahavira (महावीर lit. "Great Hero", traditionally 599 – 527 BCE[citation needed]) is the name most commonly used to refer to the Indian sage Vardhamana (Sanskrit: वर्धमान "increasing") who established what are today considered to be the central tenets of Jainism. According to Jain tradition, he was the 24th and the last Tirthankara. He is also known in texts as Vira or Viraprabhu, ...Sanmati, Ativira, and Gnatputra. In the Buddhist Pali Canon, he is referred to as Nigantha Nātaputta.
Paryushan, the most important Jain festival the is over. One custom to be followed after the last day of Paryushan (Samvatsari) is that of saying "Michhami Dukkadam".
Today is Jain Samvantsari. On this day, Pratikraman is performed, which means retrospection of all bad deeds and mistakes committed by us during the past year. We are critical of our bad deeds and resolve not to let them happen in future. We also request forgiveness from all the living beings in the world whom we might have knowingly or unknowingly hurt.
Thus, after Pratikraman it is a custom to ask for forgiveness from everyone we know and meet by saying 'Michhami Dukkadam'.
Michhami Dukkadam means may my bad deeds be forgiven. Michchhami (Mithya) means fruitless / forgiven and Dukkadam (Dushkrit) means bad deeds.
Thus, by forgiving everyone and requesting forgiveness from everyone, we lighten our minds.
